Cross-Layer Containment for Cloud-to-Edge Systems through Heterogeneous Virtualization and SLO-Aware Orchestration

Abstract:
"Industrial cloud-to-edge platforms consolidate mixed-criticality applications, yet mainstream cloud technologies lack the isolation and robustness required in safety- and latency-sensitive domains. This talk presents a unified approach to cross-layer containment spanning runtime isolation, hypervisor robustness, and control-plane latency control. We introduce runPHI, an OCI-compliant meta-runtime enabling heterogeneous virtualization and isolation-aware deployment; COSMOS, a cross-hypervisor fault-injection framework for robustness assessment; and SLO-aware orchestration mechanisms (Ulysses and PREEMPT-K8S) that reduce latency variability for high-priority services under load. We outline open challenges toward controlled and containment-aware cloud-to-edge systems."
